Armed Forces Benefit Association, known as AFBA, was established in February 1947 as a non-profit voluntary membership association with the support of the Secretary of War, Mr. Robert Patterson, and the Chief of Staff, General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower "to promote the general welfare and economic interests of its members and their families by providing low cost group life insurance and related benefits and services principally to military families during peace and war." Membership in AFBA today is available to all members of the Uniformed Military Services of the United States; Department of Defense, Homeland Security and other federal government employees and contractors; State and municipal emergency first responder employees such as police and firefighters; and families of above groups.

Since its formation, AFBA has paid death claims to the beneficiaries of its members serving in the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf conflicts, the terrorist attack on the Pentagon and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. AFBA continues to keep its rolls open during the "War on Terrorism." The Association has over 345,000 members and associate members with $37 billion of insurance in force. Claims paid exceed $1 billion.

AFBA is under the leadership of a Board of Directors of retired senior flag and non-commissioned officers and business leaders from private industry who continue to honor the mission set forth by its founders.
